Stay Cool and not stained

How Modern Fabrics keep you Cool

Perspiration is something everyone has to put up with, especially during summer when the temperatures heat up. It’s your body’s way of cooling down. Even if sweating is a part of life there’s nothing more embarrassing than arriving at a meeting with tell-tale sweat stains underneath your arms. Regardless whether anyone else notices it can knock your self-confidence, negatively effecting the impression you make and maybe losing you work. The good news is these days there are fabrics which can help prevent those embarrassing moments.

What are my options?

Advice has always been to opt for natural fabrics such as cotton or linen when trying to stay cool as these fabrics breathe better. By allowing air to hit the skin easier body temperature is soon brought down. Another advantage of these fabrics, 100% cotton, for example, is absorbing moisture from the skin to help you cool and prevent sweat from getting trapped, keeping you comfortable in the hot weather. However, cotton’s moisture absorbing advantage is also its biggest disadvantage –absorbing and retaining all that moisture creates the stains we are trying to avoid in the first place.

What’s the solution?

So how have modern fabrics adapted to solve this problem? if you’ve ever purchased sportswear then the chances are you’ve heard phrases like “moisture wicking”, but you might not know what it means right, or assumed it was nothing more than fancy advertising speak that didn’t mean anything. A fabric which claims to wick away moisture is usually made from a polyester blend, unlike regular polyester, however, which doesn’t breathe and can trap sweat against the body, these fabrics are woven in a way that moisture from the body is pulled through the material and to the surface of the garment where it can easily evaporate. Some are even chemically treated to prevent moisture from soaking into the garment and creating stains. So really these modern fabrics allow the best of both worlds, breathability without absorbing and retaining moisture. Letting you stay cool and confident no matter how warm it gets.
